Safety Joint
The Retrievable safety joint is an optional emergency backoff equipment in oil & gas well testing operation and TCP operation. If the packer becomes stuck during operations, the safety joint releases the workstring and tools above the packer. To initiate release of the safety joint, a tension sleeve must be parted by pulling on the tubing. However, this action alone is not sufficient to release the joint but must be followed by application of vertical and rotational movement for complete release of the safety joint.
Working principle and structure features.
A mandrel in the safety joint is held inoperative by a tension sleeve to help prevent premature releasing of the joint. To release the safety joint in an emergency, the tension sleeve must be parted before the joint can be operated. When the tension sleeve has been parted by pulling on the tubing, the safety joint may be completely release by holding right hand torque on the tubing while working it up and down.
4 1/2”-5”, 5 1/2” RTTS safety joint can unhitch upon two rotations of the tubing. One revolution needs two strokes. 7″RTTS Safety Joint require two strokes and 9 5/8” need three. It is about twelve revolutions for complete release of the7” and 9 5/8” RTTS safety joint.
